End of Year Portfolio

Work Hard and Persevere

I have improved a lot in persevering throughout my middle school career. Before I came to this middle school I could work and Persevere, but not much. During my career at this school I have worked hard to improve how much I try on projects and assignments. A good example would be my science projects, in these projects I persevered until I got a grade that represented my full potential of effort on that work, in science I usually get good grades on the projects because I persevered until I got a good grade or success. I think I need to work more on the work part of work hard and persevere. I think that if i get really good at working and just keep my persevering talents then I will be able to enjoy school a lot more.

Communicate Reflection

What has the skill looked like in your 8th Grade year?
I have communicated in all of my classes over this 8th grade year in different ways. In science I had a bad partner once and it was hard to discuss our ideas but me and her pushed through it and found that good communication can help you out. After we finished the project we realized that we did pretty well just because of communication. I have communicated in Ms. Pyeatt's class also, in the group projects throughout the year especially on the first project, the Imaginary Land Project, or thats what I think it was called, i communicated well with my peers in explaining ideas, finding problems, and debating over which idea is better. In spanish we do a lot of communicating just by learning the language, in order to learn verbs and understand the sentence structure we have to communicate with our spanish teacher. If we are having problems in spanish then we can talk to her and it will fix our problem so with out communicating I wouldn't be able to say, "Yo hablo EspaƱol." I have also communicated in my specials classes and worked out problems that I have had with my teachers. I have also gotten good feedback on my work like in art and music. That is how communication has looked this 8th grade year.

What aspects of the skill have you improved this year?
I have improved my communication with others during this 8th grade year. At the beginning of the 8th grade year there were some people that I just couldn't work with but we worked out our problems by communicating so that we could communicate more and do better on the things that we had to do together. I have also gotten better at communicating my ideas to others rather than keeping them to myself. Its a lot better if you share your ideas with other people mostly so that you can get feedback and see if they are good ideas or not. Everything I do I can tell that I wouldn't be able to do it as well if I hadn't improved my communication.

What aspects of the skill do you need/want to improve more?
I think that instead of focusing on increasing one part of the skill I just want to improve all parts and get better overall at communicating. I think that I communicate pretty well but I haven't experienced communication at a higher level yet so I can only assume that it will be better based on how much more I enjoyed working with other people after improving my communication.

How do you see the skill affecting your future?
I think that communication will be a major roll in my future and that it will help me accomplish goals like to be good at soccer. If I can communicate better than I can excel at soccer faster and overall do better. I also think that in the future communicating will be more of a big deal, and if people want to get anywhere in their lives then they have to be good at communicating just to have that edge over other people and get a good job, have a good family, accomplish goals, and raise to the top as long as that is what you want. So simply I think that it will be very important to communicate in the future and I think I should wok on it now because the future is coming up quickly.

Learn Reflection

What has the skill looked like in your 8th grade year?

In math I have learned lots of formulas and skills that represent how much that I have learned. We learn new formulas everyday and it pretty hard to remember them all but I can do it. In science I have learned what many different things including stuff about forces, motion, gravity, and that failing is a part of learning. In Ms. Pyeatt's classes we take notes about parts of the world and learn about the differences and struggles that happen in other parts of the world. In spanish we learn a whole different language and also learn how to use it including verb forms and sentence structure.

What aspects of the skill have you improved this year?

I think that listening is a big part of learning and that I have improved my listening over this 8th grade year. At the beginning of the year I listened some but missed some important stuff that made learning the subject hard and overall I wouldn't really remember the parts that I did listen to when we stopped learning about it. If you can listen well than you won't miss anything and can learn to your full potential rather that slacking off and not paying attention. I improved my listening by not getting sidetracked or distracted by things in my surroundings and put all my focus on my teacher when he/she was talking.

What aspects of the skill do you need/want to improve some more?

I think that even though I am a good listener that I could still improve in that category. Sometimes when I listen I dont quite get everything because the teacher is talking to fast or there is some other noise in the room. So really I think that I could improve more in cutting out distractions in my surroundings which will be hard to do but possible if I try hard and always stay focused.

How do you see the skill affecting your future?

I think that in the future learning will be a required skill because there will always be things that you need to learn to excel in life. If you have something that you are working on and you dont really know how to do it or aren't quite sure if you are doing it right or not you need to learn how to do, and you will be able to learn how to do it if you are a good learner. So really if you aren't a good learner in the future you will be slowed down much more than everyone else by each roadblock that you come across.

Collaborate Reflection

What has the skill looked like in your 8th Grade year?

I dont think that I have collaborated as much as the other skills above tis year but I have still done it a little. I think the most collaboration I did was with Win in the rocket project because we had to do lots and lots of hard stuff that we wouldn't have been able to do without each other because there was so much stuff and so little time. The hardest part of collaborating was with Hannah in Mrs. Pyeatt's class, we didn't like each other at all before the project, and afterwards we realized that if we tried then we could work together perfectly fine.

What aspects of the skill have you improved this year?

I have improved the skill collaboration because before this year there were some people that i absolutely could no work with but now I can work with anybody in the grad and make the most out of it. So I think that I have improved working with different types of people and learned how to make a group project work.

What aspects of the skill do you need/want to improve some more?

I think that I just need to improve collaboration overall so that there is not as many roadblocks even though i dont have many right now. Im thinking that im my future there is gonna be an time when there will be somebody that I am partnered with and that somebody is so hard to work with that it is basically impossible, but if I improve my collaborating skills now then I will never have to face that situation.

The above question covered the question about the future.

Solve Problems Reflection

What has the skill looked like in your 8th grade year?

I have solved a bunch of problems in my 8th grade year. In science during Jet Cars there were problems with the axles of my car but I fixed the problem by first identifying it and then figuring out how to fix it by making a plan in my head and then executing it. In Language arts there were problems with my essay and I fixed them by finding and eliminating them. I think I have solved more problems this year then any other year in middle school.

What aspects of the skill have you improved this year?/ What aspects of the skill do you need/want to improve this year?

I have improved my efficiency in solving problems. During the jet car project I could find and figure out the problems that I had faster than the years before this year. On my essays I got better at figuring out exactly what my problem was and then fixing it specifically without messing up the rest of the essay. I think I still need to improve this skill of editing my essays and fixing the problems in them but I have definitely improved a lot.

How do you think the skill will affect your future?

I think that solving problems will help my future a lot by helping me fix problems that will hold back my future. It will help me jump roadblocks that I wouldn't be able to jump if I hadn't learned how to jump if I hadn't improved my problem solving skills. I think there will be big problems in my future that I wont be able to solve unless I am very skilled at solving problems
